80% of losing weight is mental, that’s right, its all in our heads, but most diets do not address this problem. Not to mansion the destructive eating tendencies we have cultivated over the years. The fact that we use food to comfort us when we are sad, or happy or glad, these are all psychological issues. The truth about diets is that losing weight is one thing, but unless the root cause of the weight gain is dealt with, the weight will come back.

Do not expect permanent results from temporary fad diets. Up to 80% of people that engage in fad diets, gain back all there weight 6 months after the diet has ended and most even put on more weight than when they first started.
I see why the weight loss industry is a multi million dollar a year business. Most people are always on the lookout for a “magic weight loss pill” so they try new fads hoping they will find it.

Some people are in a yo-yo cycle, a constant state of dieting, but never truly able to reach and or maintaining there desired goal for weight loss. Decide to make a change in your lifestyle starting today. Sure its easy for you to say!

Change the Way You Think About Food
Changing the way we look at food and relate to eating is the fist step in any lasting weight loss plan. You will have to be patient with the process of re-learning and forming new eating habits, remember the bad habits took years to learn, so be patient. Food should become your source of nourishment first and foremost, this is not to say food should not taste great and be enjoyable, but do not rely on food as a pacifier or a mood changer or a crutch for depression or loneliness.

You may need some professional help in dealing with any depression or emotional imbalance, before you start your weight loss program this should be dealt with..

Remove all junk food and refine highly processed foods from your surrounding environment. Do not have snacks and candy bars and none nutritious food in your house. Make a list foods that you can prepare yourself, which are wholesome, nourishing and healthy. Get in the habits of buying most of your foods fresh.

Commit to doing this for life.
Remember this is not a fad diet this is a change in eating habits that will last you for the rest of your life. So instead of cooking white rice do brown rice, instead of refined white pasta, do whole wheat pasts, instead of snacking on a candy bar reach for a fruit instead of a sugary beverage, drink water instead of ice-cream have some non sweetened chilled apple sauce.

Do not eat anything or hangout in your kitchen after 6pm, leave the area and just have a fruit and a bottle of water if you get unbearably “snackish”. Be consistent and repetitive, this is how we change bad habits to good ones. If you fall of the wagon just start from where you are and get back on do not dwell on the fall this will make you more depressed and you will eat more, just move on and get back on track

Limit eating portions
After a while and you have gotten In the habit of eating healthy foods, and at the right times, we can now work on limiting the amount we eat at one sitting. This should be done gradually and methodically. If we start to starve our bodies by not eating, or skipping meals, it will be more difficult to lose weight. Our body will kick into famine mode if it suspects that we are withholding food, and that is what we do not want.

So eat three meals a day, eat them at the same time everyday and try never to skip breakfast. You should eat breakfast like a king, around 6.30 – 7am, lunch like a queen about 11.30 – 12pm and dinner like a pauper, no later than 6pm.

Try to get a baseline for the portion size when you fist get started, measure the weight of your food and record it. Then over the course of 6 week reduce the amount you eat my 40%. This most be done gradually over the 6 weeks. Most Americans eat over 100% more than they really need, so cut back on those portion sizes.

Never engage in any diet that advocate restricting or significantly limiting or completely removing any one food group from your diet. Each food group is important and they all have there respective place in our diet for optimal health. E.g. “no carb diet” or “no protein diet”. And on the flip “high protein diet” or “high carb diet.”

At least 80% of all your foods should come from fruits, nuts, legumes, grains and vegetable, this alone will cause your body to recalibrate its internal weight loss and management system for nature weight lost that will last you for the rest of your life.

Exercise is critical to your weight loss and overall health and most also be added to your daily routine. We will cover exercise in another article because you have to know how and when exercise is most effective and how to incorporate it into your lifestyle dieting plan.

Plan smaller goals that you can use along the way to ensure you are on schedule to achieve your final goal. Track your goals and your improvement by using weight loss tools such as a calorie chart, exercise chart or weight loss chart.

Look for or develop a weight loss journal. Journalizing is a great way to track your foods, water, workouts and feelings for the day and a wonderful method for you to stay committed to your weight loss.

Stop Bad Habits

Learned habits can be hard to get rid of. Let’s face it, some things we do are because we have always done them that way. Now is the time to change. Get rid of the idea that you have to eat it all. If you are in the ‘baby boomer’ age then you know what I am referring to. We were led to believe to clean our plates and could not leave the kitchen until they were clean.
Well that was then this is now. Instead of scarfing it down stop when you are full. Take smaller portion sizes and if you are still hungry go back for seconds but make it a smaller piece. When eating away from home order from the kid’s menu for smaller sizes or ask for a ‘baggie’ and keep the rest for another time.

Keep it in the Kitchen

This is one habit worth talking about as its own tip. A lot of people have a bad habit of chowing down on the move or squatting in front of the television when consuming food. Statistics show people who eat in front of the T.V. tend to eat increased portions.

This is because you are all ears and eyes on the television and not paying attention to what you are eating.
So take your food out of|away from} the T.V. room and into the kitchen. Plan this time to not only eat healthier and smarter but to catch up on your family’s day. By using your supper time as a nice time for talking you are also slowing down your eating. This will give your stomach time to tell your brain that you are full and will likely consume less.

Hide Temptation

If you find it hard to keep clear of the wrong foods, then just pitch them. The old clich ‘out of sight, out of mind’ may just do the trick for you. Go through your pantry and refrigerator and clean it out. Replace the too sweet or too fatty foods with healthier choices. Sugar free jell-o is a wonderful way to get your sweet tooth satisfied without putting on the calories. Instead of potato chips get low fat popcorn.

Aim for going at least two weeks with no fattening snacks at all. You will be thrilled at how your cravings will fade by going without for a couple of weeks. Have a bag of baby carrots or celery on hand. These vegetables help gratify the need to crunch on something and are low in calories.

Get Support

Weight loss is a monstrous challenge for many of us, so go it on your own. Look for a weight loss support group online or on-site or start your own support group. All of the really successful weight loss companies offer a groups or one on one support.
But if you are planning to go without a weight loss program then create your own support plan by including friends, family members, coworkers and neighbors. Your support can be as big or as small as you need. Let everyone know you are embarking on a weight loss journey and ask for their support and encouragement.

Track Your Weight Loss

In order to make sure you are on the right road to reaching your goals you need to record your progress. By recording how you are doing you can make alterations as needed to ensure you keep losing weight and reach your goals.

Keep track of the foods you eat and how many calories you have in a day. Track your exercise routines and how many calories you burned during exercise. This will help ensure you create a calorie deficit for losing weight. Measure or weigh yourself once a week and record your weight. Review your progress and weigh against your goal.

If you see your progress headed in the wrong direction, make adjustments to your foods and/or workout routines.

Add Variety

You need a variety of foods to keep your meals interesting and fun. Don’t burn yourself out by eating the same things day in and day out. Eat from all the food groups by including whole grains, protein, dairy, fats and veggies and fruits.

Try eating 5 to 6 mini meals every day to help your metabolism stay energized. Eat protein with each meal by including lean cuts of meat and fish and beans and eggs in your diet plan. Consume 5 – 9 servings a day of vegetables and fruits. Make your choices colorful by having dark green leafy veggies, red or orange peppers, etc. Vary your fruit selection as well having citrus fruits and non-citrus fruits.

Your dairy products should be fat free and low fat choices. Make your bread and pasta selections whole grains. The complex carbohydrates and high fiber in whole grain breads and cereals help to speed up your metabolism. Additionally you want to consume some the good fats in your food selection.

This is because your body needs some necessary fatty acids from the foods you eat as it cannot produce these fats itself. Just read the labels and choose foods that have the healthy fats and try to eliminate or reduce trans fats.

Watch What You Drink

Several people do not track or think about the amount of calories in their beverages. A regular flavored cola has more than 100 calories and 10 teaspoons of sugars. Fruit drinks are also high in sugar and calories. Switch to diet drinks and drink more green tea and water.

Watch the alcohol consumption as well. A lot of alcoholic drinks are high in calories and alcohol tends to turn to fat and sugar in your body. You should try to eliminate or reduce your alcohol intake while losing weight. Stay away from alcoholic beverages, they are not in your best interest, under any cercumstance.

Satisfy the Sweet Tooth

As you continue on your weight loss journey there will be times when you need a sweet treat. If you let your cravings go unchecked for too long then there is a good chance it will overcome you and lead to "binge eating". So go ahead and treat yourself to that tempting snack once in awhile.

Moderation is the key here. It’s okay to sneak a snack and not feel bad. Just make sure it doesn’t become a common thing but is just every now and then change from eating healthy. One of the main reasons people stop strict diets is their constant cravings eventually gets the better of them.

So go ahead and give in and make your snack small but sufficient to satisfy your sweet tooth. Then get right back on track with your weight loss progress.

Exercise!

There are a lot of people who are exercise fanatics and then there are those people who flinch at the very word exercise. However, if you want to lose weight, and here’s the key, keep it off then you need to include exercise to your weight loss plan.

By exercising you are burning excess fat and calories. You are also increasing lean muscle mass. The more lean muscles you have the higher your basal metabolic rate (BMR). The higher your metabolism the more calories and fat
you burn in a given day.

If you are just starting your workout routines, then start slow by taking a brisk walk 20 minutes several times a week. Also add some strength training 2 or 3 times a week. As you get used to this exercise routine then raise your speed and/or the duration. Increase the challenge to your muscles during your strength training as well. It doesn’t matter what you begin with just so long as you get moving and get active.

Fat-free Vanilla or Blueberry Waffles

Fat-free waffles are softer and less crispy than traditional waffles, but if you want them crispier, simply pop the cooked waffles into the toaster for a minute or two. This is also a great way to reheat leftovers.

1 1/4 cups flour (I used white whole wheat)
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon potato starch
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/3 cups soy milk (or other non-dairy milk)
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
2 tablespoons agave nectar
1/2 vanilla bean (or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract)
3/4 cup blueberries (optional)
canola oil spray

Combine the dry ingredients in a medium-sized bowl. Combine the soy milk, cider vinegar, and agave in a smaller bowl. Split the vanilla bean lengthwise and scrape the seeds into the liquid ingredients (or add vanilla extract). Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir just until all flour is moistened. If blueberry waffles, fold in blueberries. Set batter aside while you heat your waffle iron.

Spray your waffle iron with canola oil, if necessary, and follow your iron’s instructions for making the waffles, cooking until golden brown. Makes approximately 12 waffles.

Makes about 6 servings. Per serving, without blueberries: 128 Calories (kcal); 2g Total Fat; (9% calories from fat); 5g Protein; 26g Carbohydrate; 0mg Cholesterol; 542mg Sodium; 4g Fiber. 2 Weight Watchers Points.
